Aya Cagiu

http://www.cagiu.com/

Aya Cagiu graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Tama Art University in 2001. She has continued to present embroidery works since her first solo exhibition in 2011. Cagiu has sought unique expressions within the 1,400-year tradition of Japanese embroidery. She exhibited in the touring exhibition “In the Genes, Taking Marvelous Meiji Craftsmanship into the Future” at museums (2023-2025), solidifying herself as an embroidery artist in Japan. Embroidery has been passed down as talismans and amulets for communities and individuals since ancient times. Cagiu returns to prayer, the origins of embroidery, and stitches each thread with a wish. She employs her sculptural sense to develop embroidery into three-dimensional expressions, with motifs such as towns and ruins she has visited, stones and shells she has found.
