Yukino Iwatsuki

It is not something totally imaginary or conceptual thought up only in our mind, but that gives the touch of daily life.

The feeling of being alive.

We are pleased to present "Songs of Daily Life", a solo exhibition by Yukino Iwatsuki at MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY. She graduated from Visual Communication Design Course at Kanazawa College of Art in 1998. Since then, in addition to solo exhibitions in Japan, she has exhibited her works abroad, winning international prizes in 2019.

 

The act of looking is an important element in Iwatsuki's work. Fascinated by the mundane, the world that unfolds before her eyes, such as light, colour and landscape, becomes an object of trust with a sense of living. She then pushes through the act and embodies the ideals. There is a discovery of pure beauty that is nurtured in the midst of modest daily life. Although the places in her works are fictional, they are also mixed with reality, and leading this kind of near-self-sufficient life is the pillar of her working.

 

"Homogeneity" is a characteristic of Iwatsuki's work as well. All objects are painted softly with less sheen, and the colours are combined geometrically, like a patchwork, giving a uniform impression for viewers. Realism, drama and detailing are avoided as much as possible, so that the calm life without main characters and the harmony of the whole are more clearly expressed. This contrasts with Western art tradition, which was based on the concept of centre and periphery, and can be described as animistic expression that has an equal light on living and inanimate objects alike.

 

In this exhibition, we will exhibit new paintings and drawings that reinterpret a sense of daily life and sublimate it into works of art as something precious.
