We are pleased to announce Saki’s solo exhibition "Metamorphosis" at MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY.

Saki, at the age of 16, went to the US to pursue her art education, and will start her studies at the Rhode Island School of Design this autumn. She specialises in coloured pencils, which she painstakingly applies to her work in order to imprint her own messages on it. Her work often features young girls and is characterised by a unique view, interweaving imaginary worlds and integrating them with everyday scenes. Fairy tales and myths are the subject of many of her works, in which the protagonists are beautifully transformed without being bound by conventional fates of gender, race or status.

From a teenage perspective, Saki has questioned the homogenous nature of education and child-rearing in Japan, where everyone is expected to grow up to be a "good" child. In 2019, she made her hidden thoughts public for the first time with 10 works, which were simultaneously fresh and disquieting, in the exhibition here. This was followed by a period of exchange with her contemporaries in the US, where she developed a deeper understanding and empathy for those who had strayed from the prescribed path, and sublimated the experiences into her work world. In her first exhibition in 2 years, she will demonstrate the diversity and cooperation she has acquired in the society with many different ethnic groups and cultural values.

This exhibition will be Saki's first solo with 21 works, including her elaborate "Snow White", which took about 6 months to create. The works vividly portray the emotions as they are boldly reborn like a butterfly.
