We are pleased to hold a solo exhibition “Les Signes de la Renaissance” (The Sign of Revival) by Wakako Yamamoto at MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY.

Wakako Yamamoto visited Europe in 1971, entered Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Section: Painting and was awarded the top prize upon graduation. She has been Galerie Jeanne Bucher since 1982 and is now based in Paris.

Since its founding in 1925, Galerie Jeanne Bucher has been original in the world of art, producing world-class artists such as Max Ernst, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Jean Dubuffet and Nicolas de Staël.

 

Yamamoto uses a wide range of motifs from abstract images of space and plasma to everyday things such as pots, bowls and plants. She creates works on canvas and Japanese paper with oil and acrylic paints, as well as prints. The works with cosmic themes are based on her own dream experiences and the wonders of nature. In her memory of dreams, there are several striking images and physical impressions (for example, floating in outer space or feeling weightless, the shape of the earth or a planet, or in other dimensions, or between the light and matter), which she says are not mere dreams but the reality as well as objects bestowed from nature. Her works consist of figurative paintings of pots, bowls, and plants, as well as abstract ones, effectively using the soaking and dripping of paint with improvised brush strokes. They have her graceful, feminine strength and the mysterious, Oriental spirit that has been nurtured during more than 3 decades of French life.

 

In this exhibition, many precious old works which had not been shown in Japan until now, mainly new works, will be on display, such as a portrait series without a face which she has been painting for 25 years, "Naissance" series which reminds us of space and microscopic photographs, and a large work using the whole wall of the gallery.
