MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Masami Kidachi “One step Beyond”.

Masami Kidachi graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University of Sculpture in 1979.
She started to make ball-jointed dolls from 1981 to search for the possibility of moving sculptures.
After that, she exhibited her works in many group/solo shows and made a special doll which was used for Japanese film “REINCARNATION” in 2005.

Hans Bellmer, German artist was introduced in the Japanese magazine by Tatsuhiko Shibusawa in 1965, and it made ball-jointed dolls spread throughout Japan with the strong impact.
The ball-jointed doll has produces many great artists as Shimon Yotsuya, Ryo Yoshida etc. and it is known as representative of Japanese culture.

Basically the value of the doll is decided by how precise/beautiful in Japan and there are many great artists who can make it.
But Masami is an unique and rare artist because she has not only skill of making it also understands the mysterious power which the boll has and try to tell audiences about the fascination.

The portrait of paintings or sculptures often express the interior of person. On the other hand, the doll has shape of human and it’s just ‘stuff’ without the interior. Because of it, the doll are accepted as these are and also can have the capacity to accept all human feelings. It means the doll is in existence which will never betray human.

Her challenge is making the dolls with taking notice of that human open their mind to the doll which is just stuff in the present day. To emphasize that is ‘stuff’, Masami removes typical images of human with putting color leaves on the surface or putting bugs/shells into the body of resin.

Her dolls let us realize the starting point of each communication to be accepted by accepting between human and dolls at first, and then human and stuffs, human and natures, human and animals, human and human in the end.

In this exhibition, we show around 10 her works including full-length dolls with mixed colored, masks, also a resin doll with bugs which is one of her most important work etc.

We hope you enjoy the special solo exhibition of Masami Kidachi “One step Beyond” at Showcase MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY.
