Tomokazu Hiroe (b.1976. graduated from oil painting course of Musashino Art Univ.)’s work is based on a technique developed by later Flemish painters in the 17th century which allows him to paint with a great sense of three dimensionality. He combines this skill with two-dimensional expressions referred from Japanese painting, calligraphy and illustration. Also by wrapping up painting with a sheet of plastic for finish instead of using lacquers, the surface evenly shines like photograph.
It has been natural for his age artist to have both western and Japanese consciousness and the view for the world and his own creation through cultural influence.

In this exhibition, Hiroe decided on Jigoku Zoshi motif.
Jigoku Zoshi are 12th-century hand scrolls depicting Buddhist hells.
The contrasts between the traditional western painting technique and the calligraphic lines, the three-dimensional and flat depictions, the use of oil painting and plastic sheet, do not conflict each other but magically merge together in an unusual way . This illogical and unstable sense of existence is the reality that he pursues to express.

We will show his latest 6 paintings including the largest four-piece joint painting(260 x 324cm) and mural painting of Choju Jinbutsu Giga (caricatures of frolicking birds and animals) which is also very old traditional Japanese style of illustration.
Don’t miss Hiroe’s big challenge for Painting!
